I've got an old 6 MHz IBM AT laying around with a smoked HD, and two good floppies (1.2 Mb and 360K). I am considering either the purchase of new hardware, or turning this old AT chassis into the "486 AT clone from Hell". I have a couple of questions about buying aftermarket hardware and this old mid-80's technology chassis. Does anybody make a 486DX2-66 Motherboard that will plug and play with this thing? I want the fastest memory access possible (fastest cache controller for the bucks, with 256K of SRAM cache). And I want the capability to go to 32 Mb of RAM in the 70 ns range. What is the fastest VESA based video card with SVGA resolution that works with Xfree86?? Are there any VESA-bus drive controllers available (SCSI OR IDE), as I don't want this box to suffer from slow I/O. It also has to support at least one of the floppies (st506 interface, I think) How hard is it to get mounting brackets for the new half-height drives for this old box?? I'd like the 16550 based FIFO'd UART for SLIP. any help would be appreciated. BTW: I've looked at Computer Shopper, and am over whelmed with information. -Dan -- => Dan DeClerck | EMAIL: declrckd@rtsg.mot.com <= => Motorola Cellular APD | <= =>"Friends don't let friends wear neon"| Phone: (708) 632-4596 <= ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
