Actually, the OS/2 boot manager requires that the boot track for a "bootable" (in its opinion) partition to checksum to a specific value (install DOS on a naked disk to find out which one, then change the partition table to find out where the checksum adjust goes). Anything that doesn't match is considered non-bootable. I haven't seen the changes in the NetBSD or FreeBSD boot blocks yet, so I suppose you are lucking out.
