well, you would probably be better running ppp which can be configured easier
to 'escape out' control characters etc.
It's more designed to run ocross lousy non-transparrent lines than slip
is which requires more transparency.

note that FreeBSD cannot (at this time) run slip/ppp over a pty due to a
little problem in the pty code, but it should be able to run at the modem
end of things fine..

I plan to use this scheme myself with ppp
and had it 'sort of' running with 386bsd (but will eventually have
to fix FreeBSD)
