Subject: power conservation for laptos running unix?

I am interested in running unix on a laptop. A major concern
is battery life.

So, my quetion is this: what power conservation techniques work
while running unix, which ones don't work (panics?), and which ones
backfire (i.e. shorten battery life).

Obviously, the 30 sync cycle is likely to keep the disk powering
up & down all the time, or to keep it on all of the time. However,
I believe that this can be tuned (esp. with source!).

What other aspects are there to consider?
