 it seems that i had the MouseSystems / Microsoft mode toggle on the back of 
my mouse set innappropiately.

 i had, as a matter of completenes, done stty -f /dev/tty01 clocal, this 
allowed tip com1 to 'see' the mouse.

 So, once i had specified mousesystems in Xconfig AND placed the toggle in the Right place .... *:)

 well, this is being written from a xterm! ...now if only i can get out of this 640x480 16 color mode *:).
