With my system, things appear to be slightly different. Using the startx script in the normal way (no redirection), my console exhibits the same symptoms. With an interesting quirk, though: If, before starting X, I have used the console (read a couple of man pages, use an editor etc) then the problem disappears. When I use redirection (startx >& /dev/null) the console does not freeze up any more. However, all is *not* OK: After exiting X, I try to read a manpage but instead I get: TIOCGPGRP: inappropriate ioctl for device The system is NetBSD 0.9, running pccons and XFree 2.0. Any help appreciated, D.
