A short summary:

A port of tvtwm is basically done if one has a look at the file lex.l of
twm from the MIT/XFree86-2.0.

All olvwm ports seem to be some more or less sorts of "hacks" mostly due
to the usage of get/setlocale et al. in olvwm - i did not try further.

Almost all replies mentioned a window manager i had not heard of until 
then - fvwm. So i got myself fvwm 1.05 and it compiled and ran out of
the box ! Looks really nice !
