When I configured my name services this weekend, I got lazy and left the in-addr.arpa domain for later (it was late at night at the time :-)). Telnet and ftp, among others, do a reverse lookup to find the name of the host coming in. This of course took a while to time out. Thus the delay. Configuring the in-addr.arpa domain fixed the problem.
