here's what i tell people when they ask me:

[ these are my opinions based on my experience (or lack of it) with these OS's ]

linux: tends to focus on getting performance and MSDOS compatibility.
there are many other linux efforts, and much good work is done
which is passed on to the other "free unix's".

386BSD: was the original BSD for PC, does not seem to have much happening
since development/maintenance effort splintered into NetBSD and
        FreeBSD.

NetBSD: tends to focus on core/kernel functionality. efforts are aimed at
enhancing/fixing the kernel and various system level programs
and libraries. these fixes then spread out towards FreeBSD and Linux.

FreeBSD: tends to focus on stability and user functionality. they pick up
lower level fixes from Linux and NetBSD (they also do some work in
those areas). FreeBSD has kept the versions of stuff in the bin
         directories up to date.

if you are trying to decide which one you should run, try installing/running
all of them. also, hang out in the appropriate newsgroups and mailing lists
for a while until you find a comfortable fit.

none of these OS's is what i would call "production", so having a good
comfort level with the people involved in the OS of your choice is important.
