No, you'r not being even remotely dumb, yes it really is a bug. The patchkits do a wonderful job of fixing the bugs, and then go on to introduce the disklabel bug :) Simple solution: book off your original install bootup disk, and disklabel it from there. Or since you have booted it up already with the single drive, you should be able to use it now. FreeBSD fixes this and a few other bugs, I just upgraded myself from 386bsd to FreeBSD - I think it's definately worth the effort.
