The GENERICAHA kernel was built with only 4 ptys. You have to recompile a kernel with more of them. I think I put mint to 16, and it's pretty much okay. I do believe however, that there is a memory cost for increasing the number of ptys, so you don't want to get overzealous and have 1048576 ptys on your machien.
