The biggest obstacle to the wider acceptance of systems like FreeBSD and Linux in commercial environments is that they do not support commercial software i.e. DBMSs, accounting packages, inventory control etc. The prefered platform for these systems is (sadly) SCO. Until this is corrected, probably through the use of a compatibility mode that allows the OS to run SCO binaries, free systems will be mainly used at home. I personally would *love* to be able to use NetBSD or FreeBSD at work esp. since the introduction of Solaris 2 on the SUN platform which used to be one of the last BSD-like (i.e. reasonable) commercial OSs. **vp ----------------------------------- Vassilis Prevelakis | vp@csi.forth.gr Thoukididou 10A | old style address: Plaka, Athens 105 58 | ...!mcvax!ariadne!vp GREECE | Tel. +30 1 32 32 867 | FAX +30 1 72 24 603
