If i just skip the 'set density', the tape works fine. >Does the 5525ES have some special flags in setting the tape density? make sure that the media matches the density that you're trying to write. there are several different QIC standards, all of which use cartridges which look superficially like one another; however, the tape drive can distinguish between the two (I don't know quite how, though..). If it's a QIC525 drive, make sure you have a 525MB tape, not an el-cheapo QIC150 or smaller tape. - Bill
