It sounds to me that Glen is caught in one of the saddest traps of
binary-only distributions.  He can no longer go and read the source
code for getlongprop(), map_regs() to see what they do, but the
OS suppliers don't supply adequate documentation.

Now, given that Glen is at MIT, they may actually have a source
license for whatever OS he is using.  Glen should talk to his local
wizards for information about this.
