It worked fine for me for months (386bsd-0.1, FreeBSD-1.0{E,G,.2,current}
with two IDE drives (both Seagate 3550A) on an VLB IDE controller which has
two IDE interfaces (the drives aren't chained as master/slave), WITH or
WITHOUT swap on both drives.
