I have just loaded up FreeBSD from freebsd.cdrom.com

The install was fairly clean. No problems. However, I seem to have a
permissions problem. Other than root, no one can mail.

Giving /var/mail 777 fixes it but giving it read/write for the world does
not. The X bit must be turned on. I have tried all sorts of combos and
only 777 makes email works.

Also, I have put myself in the wheel group, yet I can not su.
I think it is again a permission problem. Meaning, If I give myself full
rwx to /etc I would be able to su.

This is a brand new install.

Is freebsd considered stable? I don't want to have to fight with something
as simple as the chmod command. How does NetBSD compare?

I am looking for a box that will give lan people net access via unix.
ie: ftp, telnet, gopher, plus I would run gopherd and a www daemon.
