Message-ID: <5550@umriscc.isc.umr.edu> Date: 27 Jul 92 18:35:50 GMT Sender: news@umriscc.isc.umr.edu Organization: University of Missouri - Rolla Lines: 133 Originator: jlu@mcs213f.cs.umr.edu The answer is NO. From all the responses I got, it seems to me that OPTI + Tiny disk is not the problem. It may be caused by something else -- my OAK vga or H/FD controller. Although some of the mailers indicated they have some minor problems, they all have bootable 386bsd-0.1 in hd. The followings are the mails I got. --Eric ================================================================= From: s891961@minyos.xx.rmit.OZ.AU (Peter David Cupit) Configuration: 386 25, 64k cache, no co-pro, mono card 2mb ram with 1920 free, (since my bios appears to grab memory for shadows even if they are off?) My motherboard has chips marked OPTI on it and it uses an AMI bios . [Dated 04/30/90] 386 bsd boots fine. Fixit boots fine. I also ran the install program and have bsd booting of a 20mb st506 drive , unfortunatly I don't think I have enough resources to spare to install the complete thing. -Still use DOS, I admit it! :) Problems: The keyboard locks if I push caps-lock or num-lock (linux also used to lock up when I pushed num-lock). Cannot suspend tip for example but I can suspend zmore. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jnpotts@iastate.edu You got it! OPTI chipset with AMI BIOS dated 8/30/90 (or something like that date). And, YES, the disk won't boot (unless I set the bios to no hard drive, and reboot twice). [NOTE: jnpotts's problem was solved by changing to 782 cynlinders with 4 heads.] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Daniel A Muntz <dmuntz@dip.eecs.umich.edu> I have a 486DX50 with opti chipset and AMI BIOS and it seems to work fine under 0.0 and 0.1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Scott Burris <scott@pita.CNS.UCLA.EDU> I have an OPTI chipset and 0.1 works just fine. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Clifford A Adams <caadams@lacerta.unm.edu> I just thought I'd add that I had problems with an OPTI 386-wb chipset running Linux. The problems would only go away if I disabled the hardware cache. I have read references that some OPTI chipsets may be incompatible with 3-chip 1-meg SIMMS. I'll try to provide more information if you'd like... -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Michael Squires" <mikes@iuvax.cs.indiana.edu> If you include 486's I've been able to boot from the tiny disk using my 486/25 using the OPTI chipset and an Adaptec controller. The system came from Broadax Systems (BSI). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dixie Flatline <kkkg3408@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu> I have a no-name clone 386sx with OPTI chipset and AMI bios, albeit not Magitronic. I've had no trouble booting the Tiny 386bsd disk at all. I haven't tried to install it, though, as I only have 42Mb, and with DOS and Linux already there... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Ross Sponholtz" <p00057@mail.psi.net> I have an OPTI chipset machine, a 486/33 with a ET4000 svga and a 200 meg drive. I had many problems booting 386bsd v0.0, and v0.1 would not boot off a 3.5" floppy. But, it booted just fine off the 5.25", and I can boot off the hard disk just fine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: gt@prosun.first.gmd.de (Gerd Truschinski) I have an AMI Bios dated 09.90 and a OPTI Chip set and I could boot very fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: rmw3@po.CWRU.Edu (Richard M. Warwick) Sorry, I have a MAGITRONIC motherboard with an OPTI chipset (38625DX) and the floppy boots without a hitch...I haven't installed it to the hard drive yet, but everything seems in order... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: steiner@radium.informatik.uni-bonn.de (Wolli) hi, I have an OPTI chipset and AMI bios and there aren't any problems with booting 386bsd0.1 bye Gruss Wolli (steiner@radium.informatik.uni-bonn.de) (wolli@apoll.cs.bonn.edu) (wolli@plutonium.dbc.com) -- ***************************************--- Grad. student ---* * Obviousness is always the enemy of * \ Jui-Lin Lu (Eric) / * * correctness. -- Bertrand Russell * / jlu@cs.umr.edu \ * ***************************************--- Univ. of Missouri-Rolla ---*
