Usually I use gcc 1.39 but I was able to use gcc 2.2.2 Compiled my 386bsd with 16 pty(pseudo terminals, good for X windows). Each pty consumes some memory. There is no problem with 4Mbyte 386 but if you only have 2 Mbyte, you can still run programs but it is very slow for large programs. > BSD is good but what's the point if I cant even use it with 4MB > ram in even just a text mode?! 386 BSD and Linux which comes with sources codes, can be configured to be any size you want it to be. FreeBSD uses more memory because it has extras in its kernel, like DOS file system, which I do not like, because mtools can substitute it nicely. You also may save some RAM by using shared libs. I'm using one but not for all my binaries, only for newly compiled ones. In conclusion, Coherent is heavily advertised but it can never beat *BSD functionality, flexibility and even support. After all, you have the source codes. About well balanced Coherent, it is just advertising hype, you can balance the *BSD in any way you like. About bugs, how can you be so sure that Coherent has no bugs. Just learn to live with them, for the moment, unless you have lots of money. SABAH is HEAVEN. Beautiful islands, mountains and jungles are next to 5 star hotels. There are no natural and very few man-made disasters, BUT for how long will it last? Disclaimer: I only speak for myself
