I do not agree with you. I'm using the PPP and SLIP from FreeBSD 1.0.2 over
a 14.4k modem without the gateway option. My understanding is that you need
GATEWAY only if you  want to forward  packets from an interface to  another
(i.e. from ppp0 to ed0 for example).

I'm using FreeBSD but I do not think  that it is  likely to be different in
NetBSD.
