thanks to all who responded.  to answer your questions:

my /etc/master.passwd file lists the passwords encrypted.  so unless
there is more than one type of encryption algorythm used across
FreeBSD systems, i have the standard DES installed.

i am using the xdm-des binary which came with Xfree86.  it is the only
xdm binary i see.

help?
