I literally dropped in the contributed SVR4 shared memory patches for BSDI into 386bsd and they worked... This was done a long time ago by our standards. Or, if you like try out freebsd it already has the patches and all what you have to do is compile the kernel with the shared memory extensions. The supplied kernel config file, LINT, has an example on how to configure shared memory extensions for freebsd.
