Summary: any way to make it work?

I have a system I'm trying to install NetBSD on.
But it won't reliably write the correct information
to the SCSI drives.

I have an Adaptec 1542CF as the controller,... and
I've seen things in q&a archives that indicate that
maybe it doesn't work.
I've even tried hacking the '1542C' fixes in the FreeBSD
aha1542.c into the NetBSD 0.9 version, but that didn't
help anything.

Can ANY of the free unix os's use the 1542C, or do I
need to find a 1542B (or just give up and get an Ultrastor 14F) ?
(Is there anybody successfully using the Ultrastor, for that
matter?)
