Following up to my own earlier posting on this thread, I forgot to mention
that I there were some fairly substantial patches to the wt driver that
were posted on one of these groups *after* the FreeBSD 1.0.2 release.
The patched version is what I am running.  I don't know if I have the
source version of the patches handy, but here is the identifying information
from the wt.c file:
