I turned on debugging for pppd and chat. In the log output, I see that the first time chat tries to write to the modem, it times out. I thought this might be a problem with clocal not being set on the device. So I "stty -f /dev/tty01 clocal" before running ppp-on. Same problem. I even patched pppd to set CLOCAL right before it calls chat. Same problem. And I notice that after pppd dies, clocal has been turned off on /dev/tty01. Has anybody gotten ppp to work under FreeBSD? What's the trick to get chat to talk to the modem? Please answer via email, if there's interest I'll summarize. Thanks, Dave Cottingham dc@cobi.gsfc.nasa.gov
