You may also have to compile it without -DLINEMODE.

I had to disable KLUDGELINEMODE to achieve interoperability with
SunOS 4.1.X (when using tcsh).  People still complained about problems
telnetting in from AIX 3.X, so I also had to turn off LINEMODE.
