I gave up on commercial cables.  I got the campus electronic shop to crimp on 
some db36 pin connectors on 50connector flat ribbon cable.  I have hooked up 
many external devices using these cables and I have had no problems.  Remember 
that this cable is used internally, therefore I should work o.k. externally.  
Answer:  Yes, all timeout problems went away.
