the standard spiel is that linux is more of a sysv system, and
*bsd [freebsd and netbsd] are 4.3 net/2 derived systems. in
terms of technical merit, i don't think that either is really
	'better' than the other.

however, linux has 100,000,000,000,000 people using it, whereas
the *bsd os's tend have a bit less. therefore, if you're a high
maintenance requireing person [ie, you get stuck more than somebody
who's been doing this a long time], it's probably a little easier
to deal with, since they have about 100,000 texinfo and other
documents that describe various things about the os. [highly
sensitive poeple might have a hard time noting the egregious
	exaggerations].

i personally use 386bsd dervied os's on my machine, but am more
and more frequently recommending linux for new people. for
experienced people who have used and loved things like sunos,
	bsd-du-jour is a gas.
