Actually, there is a man page for a real init (if you have sources install init.bsdi instead of init). The reason we used the original 386BSD init instead of the two better versions is because of the amount of space required by the new versinon, and floppy space for the install was an issue. The new default init is now the BSDI version, which IMHO is much better. As far as SLIP goes, many folks are running quite happily at very high speeds and Kerberos was just ported to -current in the last few days, so it is doable.
