The next version uses shared libraries (DLL for DOS weenies), so disk usage will be lessened, especially with regards to X applications. (My /usr/X386/bin is around ~5MB with the stock X apps. for the XFree86 2.0 distribution compiled shared :-) A compressing filesystem would be nice, but until someone sits down and writes on, there are utilities that compress your executables and reduce the amount of space required on your hard drive. If it were me, I would wait for FreeBSD 1.1 coming out in the next month or so with shlibs.
