This is a known problem with machines with (it appears) PHOENIX BIOS,
most notably Gateways experience it.

The temporary cure for installation is to bounce on a innocent key
like shift or num-lock (you can see the LED's with num-lock) to get
the keyboad to work.

Generally the problem goes away when the software is installed on
the hard-drive, but if that doesn't work build a kernel with syscons
in it and all will be well.

(Or don't reboot :-)
