Strangely enough I had exactly the same problem. I bet you have been making
some devices, and inadvertently created a bogus /dev/tty or something like that.

Hang on... I'll log into my FreeBSD box....

I fyou are running FreeBSD and the device /dev/tty does _not_ look like this:

crw-rw-rw- 1 root 1, 0 Feb 9 22:03 tty

it should. I urge extreme caution with this. you might lock yourself out
of your box if you are not careful.

Probably the best move is to cd to /dev and try a `sh MAKEDEV all' and see what
happens.

When this happened to me I had been fiddling making syscons devices and
while fiddling with the MAKEDEV script created this bogus tty. I actually
went through the extract process again thinking some binary had been screwed
up at some stage. Boy was I upset when that didn't fix it.

: I've tried running pwd_mkdb, useing binaries from another FreeBSD machine, but

Almost the same as extracting the sources... It won't help

: the problem won't go away...

: Help me!

good luck
