Lines: 85 Message-ID: <2jb6ho$eag@zip.eecs.umich.edu> NNTP-Posting-Host: nova.gmi.edu X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.2 PL0] [ Article crossposted from comp.os.msdos.programmer ] [ Author was Da Young Genius ] [ Posted on 9 Feb 1994 17:22:35 GMT ] This follow-up is to clarify some of the terms that I used in "Vote on the Best OS". Sometimes I get to technical, so hear are the clarifications of what I'm looking for: * Functionality How well is it suited for its task * Speed How efficient is it at handling routine system tasks? * Programmability Are there a large variety of languages that support this platform? How much effort does it take to program in this OS? * Interface (Graphical/Command Line) Is it object oriented? Does it have command completion? * Is it customizable Is it easy to add components to the system like hard drives, CD-ROM drives and other devices of that nature? * Power What can you do with it as it relates to the operating system? * Memory Management How efficient does it handle memory? (Probably just applies to DOS machines...) * File System How well organized is the file system? How powerful is it? * Graphical capability Don't worry about it, that's machine dependent. * Ease of Networking How easily can you plug it into a network? * Integrated Networking How well will the machine actually mesh with the network? * Applications No clarification needed in my opinion. * Interoperability How well is suited for working with other operating system platforms, i.e., reading their disks, exporting information to other platforms and formats? * Ease of use Self-explanatory. Hopefully, I will continue to receive more opinions about best operating systems. You may want to include the preferred machine, we can add that to the list as well. IN THE MEANTIME, read these questions and think before voting. I keep a hard copy of the names of people who've voted so that noone votes twice. However, the people that have voted before Feb 10, are encouraged to vote again since I clarified all of the categories. -ADG -------------------------------------------------------------- I really miss the computer with the BASIC interpreter as the primary operating system. Forget the P5 and UNIX, go back to the Commodore 64 or the TI-99/4 Oh, BTW, vote on your favorite operating systems.
