The fix for the middle mouse button problem was the ChordMiddle keyword added to Xconfig; the console hang problem was relieved by using /dev/vga instead of pccons. Thanks to Mark Weaver for recommending both these solutions. The com port open problem got a bit better when I moved some of the changes from the NetBSD-current com.c driver into the NetBSD-0.9 driver. So I now have a stable system. Thanks to all who helped.
