lpr and Postscript question: lpr: Fatal error <postscript> file too large ?

Hey all you comp.unix.wizards, comp.unix.questions, comp.unix.bsd:

We have a crunch on spool space which limits the size of our print files
to about 1M bytes. Unfortunately we are constantly being given, or
generating, ".ps" (postscript) files bigger than this. No, we are not
given the ".dvi" file, just the postscript. We can't print it, it's too big.

So then we try (by hand) to break the file into smaller chunks. Nope.
Checksum error or something, the system rejects the file as garbage.

Now: SOMEBODY out there must have a postscript-breakup utility! Something
preferable that does not require that we know what the page numbers are in
the file (either it should TELL us that, or else it should take some
"start-page-index-relative-to-start-of-file + number of pages" from us). It
should produce a consistent, postscript-approved page subset file from the
original file, (obviously) introducing no changes into the printed text.

PLEASE anyone have this utility ? Where can I ftp it from ? If there's
interest then I will post any replies BUT

PLEASE email your reply/request (don't post it please) to me at:
