I wrote a PD-ish "cron" replacement in 1986 and though I tried very hard to get AT&T to take it and blow away the ridiculous one they still ship in their latest SysV releases, they politely declined. So did every other vendor I offered it to, because they already had the SYSV one and they didn't want to become incompatible with it.
