Are both machines using the same VLB video card?  I find it very
difficult to imagine a big difference in speed since during the XFree86
test cycle there were little to no differences in video speed on
equivalent hardware.  (The operating system made little difference in
the X performance)

An easy way to test this is to switch hard-drives on the machine and
see what happens. :-)

The difference there is due to shared binaries vs. static binaries.  The
next version of FreeBSD will have smaller binaries due to shared libraries
as well.
