What will this do to the size of these operating systems? FreeBSD 1.1 will be out sometime in March (middle to late would be my best guess). The size reduction is not know at this time, but here is a very out-dated comparison I made a while back which is not completely accurate (there are static binaries and lots has changed since then) Usr-Dir Static Shared ------- ------ ------ bin 17112 7886 games 3752 1486 include 2036 1422 lib 2024 3167 libexec 8592 4132 sbin 3148 911 Both /sbin and /bin are compiled statically for safety. >What other enhancements can we expect with new versions? New tools, bug fixes, better drivers, cleaner code. One of the biggest new features of FreeBSD is it contains a brand-new VM system which uses less memory, pages much quicker when it is needed, uses less swap memory, does not hang when swap runs out, etc.. A list of new features is available from FreeBSD-current/sys/i386/doc in the FreeBSD-current directory on FreeBSD.cdrom.com.
