Hi. I set up my FreeBSD-1.0 system a while ago, and, for the most part, things
work very well. However, I have a problem with my second HD. Apparently, I
have set it up incorrectly. It works fine sometimes, but there seems to be a
limit on the amount of data I can put on it. Let me describe this more
specifically. I have almost none of it used, it being my "user" disk. When I
tried writing to it tonight, it started making a terrible buzzing noise, and I
had to reboot. I thought I'd try copying a bunch of stuff into a subdirectory.
So, I copied all of /usr/local/bin (on my other disk) into a subdirectory on
the disk in question, with no problems. Then, I cd into the subdir and cp
emacs ../, and the buzzing starts again.

It seems as though I have formatted the disk incorrectly. Now, I haven't had
any problems with the first disk, which was set up by the floppy installation.
The first disk is a WDC AC2340 (340 MB West. Dig. Caviar IDE). My second disk
is a WDC AC2170 (170 MB ...). To format the disk, I ran it through fdisk,
disklabel and newfs. I have it setup as a c: partition, using the whole disk.

Before I continue to ramble through all the stuff I've done, maybe some kind
soul out there has a WDC AC2170, which works well for him/her. If you don't
mind, would you mail me a copy of your fdisk, disklabel and disktab output. I
could compare it with what I have, and maybe fix the problem.

Thanks for reading this long message. Also, thanks in advance for any and all
help.

Shawn
