I finally got my IDE to work with 386BSD by going to native mode, and resetting ALL of the DOS partitions (implies backup/restore hard disk). With this done, I restored my DOS partition, then my Minix partition, set a third partition to A5 (386BSD), booted 386BSD, installed an appropriate disklabel (finally!) and everything worked. Fortunately I'd just bought a new 386 motherboard with a BIOS that allowed me to set my IDE drives in native mode. Hope this helps!
