Help! Can somebody offer a few suggestions about my installing problems?

My system configuration is:
  386DX-20 with 387
  5MB RAM
WD7000-WA2 disk controller (ESDI + Floppy)
CGA (I'm going to run this machine down a serial line.)
3.5 inch 1.44M floppy, 729M Maxtor ESDI HD.

The kernel floppy boots OK, asks for the file system floppy, describes
my hardware accurately (processor, memory, hard disk, floppy) and then
hangs at "changing root device to fd0a". Sometimes after waiting five
minutes and bashing keys I get "trap 12" errors of assorted types. Often
the machine subsequently decides to reboot.

I have checked my hardware's setting and jumpers, and tried many alternative
settings just in case, but nothing helps.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks,
       Julian.
