The most factual factoid I have to support this is the response from both camps to my posting of my Linux and BSD counters on March 1. One was posted to comp.os.linux.misc, the other to comp.os.386bsd.misc. This is the number of mails to the counter over the next few days: Linux-counter@uninett.no (5300 people registered): Mon Feb 28: 4 Tue Mar 1: 79 Wed Mar 2: 29 Thu Mar 3: 18 Fri Mar 4: 22 bsd-counter@uninett.no (554 people registered): Sat Feb 26: 1 (nothing on Sunday and Monday) Tue Mar 1: 9 Wed Mar 2: 9 Thu Mar 3: 7 Fri Mar 4: 5 Error sources include the reading patterns of the users, the number of times the counters have been mentioned in both groups, the phase of the moon and the imminent release of Linux 1.0. Personally, I don't think 10 times as many users means 10 times better, or Microsoft Windows would be the best operating system in the world. Followups would have been to comp.os.linux.advocacy.....set to comp.unix.advocacy for want of a better group. (To get included in either count, send E-mail: For free BSD-derived OS-es: bsd-counter@uninett.no, subject line "I use <BSDversion> at <place> For Linux: linux-counter@uninett.no, subject line "I use Linux at <place>" <place> can be work, home, or school. <BSDversion> can be FreeBSD, NetBSD or 386BSD) -- Harald Tveit Alvestrand Harald.T.Alvestrand@uninett.no G=Harald;I=T;S=Alvestrand;O=uninett;P=uninett;C=no +47 73 59 70 94 My son's name is Torbjørn.
