I've run X with 8Mb successfully both under NetBSD 0.9 and FreeBSD
1.0.2. I must say I have seen no significant differences in
performances.

The machine is barely usable (under X) when news batches are
decompressed, but I guess it's more a disk interface problem (I
use IDE) than lack of RAM.

However, I'm looking forward to the VM improvements of FreeBSD 1.1.
