It is an unfortunate fact that there will probably never be a merger between the two groups. There was an attempt late last year, which didn't get past some differences between the two teams' members. There is now way to get people who disagree with each other all the time to work together. This is just something that we will all have to live with. There is however a fair bit of cross-pollenation between the 2 projects, and I believe that they can still help each other's progress, despite the impossibility of a merger. Yes, I know that it makes things more difficult and confusing for the user community, and yes a few wheels are being reinvented, but that is the way things are. The two teams have different priorities in their work on BSD, and as such they tend to concentrate on these areas of their systems. It is up to the prospective *BSD user to decide which product suits her needs better, and install that product.
