I'm running FreeBSD-almost-1.1BETA on a slow ol' 386sx/16. Works well,
also with XFree86 (with the 4-bit server, which is now [XFree86 2.1]
also capable of a staticgray visual). You would run best with one of
the newer BSD's (not yet released) with shared libs, notebooks usually
don't have tons of disk space. (And shlibs save also real RAM.)

There's only one annoying thing: notebooks tend to alarm with NMIs
for power fails. The NMI handling - at least in FreeBSD - is still
horrid. As soon as i'm having a reliable solution, i gonna commit it
to the source. If anyone runs into such troubles, i could give out
a patch.
