Date: Sun, 2 Aug 1992 08:54:38 GMT G'day O Wise UNIX users, I am a complete beginner when it comes to setting up UNIX systems. I can use 'em when they are set up, but I've never done set one up myself. I am trying to bring 386BSD 0.1 up on a 486/33 PC at present and not having much luck :-( Before I cover the problem here is a quick description of the machine: 486/33DX 4M memory Maxtor 760M ESDI HD UltraStor 12f ESDI controller 1.44M (A:) and 1.2M (B:) floppies Trident 8900 SVGA card OK, when I boot the Tiny-BSD disk life is great. It sees the floppies and HD (as an UltraStor :-) as I would (in my ignorance) expect. When I type "install" the system asks me whether I want to install it on the whole disk or not. If I say yes I get the warning messages about wiping the drive and then: wdsetctrl: status 1 error 4 High level formatting of 386BSD disk storage: Warning: inode blocks/cyl group (142) >= data blocks (128) is last cylinder group. This implies 2048 sector(s) cannot be allocated. /dev/rwd0a: 1277952 sectors in 624 cylinders of 64 tracks, 32 sectors 654.3MB in 39 cyl groups (16c/g, 16.78MB/g, 3840i/g) super-block backups (for fsck -b #) at: 32, 32832, 65632, 98432, ....... <more of the same pattern> 1180832, 1213632, 1246432 wdsetctrl: status 1 error 4 newfs: ioctl (WDINFO) No such process newfs: /dev/rdw0a: can't rewrite disk label Could not format filesystem. Installation failed. # A similar thing (the wdsetctrl stuff and newfs junk) occurs if I try to install 386BSD onto a partition rather than the whole drive. Sooooooo, can somebody/anybody/you PLEASE tell me what to do to install BSD? Please do NOT assume that somebody else will help me, PLEASE drop me an email note if you can offer a suggestion as to what I should do. Hey, flame away if you like (I know I'm not good at this), just tell me how to fix it please :-) Thanks HEAPS, Richard McConachy. (ricky@lindblat.cc.monash.edu.au or ricky@sweeney.cs.monash.edu.au)
