What's the 1k got to do with it ? If you want 256 colours under X then you need: 1byte (256 colours) * 640 * 480 = 307200 bytes = 300 K which you simply haven't got. Try running X in 16 colours and you should have any problems with 256k, 1k scratch pad or not. >I find this hard to accept.
