Well, i had the same problem. I just got a static server and recompiled
the clients. Which seemed enough to get going. A few notes :

Get a working imake first ! (It costs me hours to find one !)

The compiling of the clients should work out of the box.
Be carefull when it comes to linking the clients. It seems that
sometimes libXmu.so.?.? is broken. To be sure link that lib static.

OK, the above worked allright for me, but it would be best if someone
took the time and effort to recompile XFree86-2.1 with NetBSD-current
and libc.9.0.

PS: Does anyone know why NetBSD/FreeBSD/386BSD don't like my tvga8900b ?
    Well it doesn't like starting in VGA mode (Hard CGA works allways ?!?)
