If someone comes up with a nice, reasonably portable method for XFree86 to optionally use BIOS modes rather than modes defined in the Xconfig file, then we'd be interested in adding it to XFree86. Something we do hope to look into sometime is using SVPMI files (these file provide a description that can be used by a protected-mode OS to initialise modes on a graphics card). Don't know how many cards come with these files though -- none of the cards I have do.
