In /etc/ttys you probably have a line for tty00 with getty std.9600
(or whatever baud rate you have on the port).  The symbol 'std.9600' is
defined in /etc/gettytab - edit this file, copy the std entry and
call it '8bit.9600' - then follow the documentation in the comments at the
top of the file and add in 'np:' to the end (or whatever you need to
set 8bit properly).
