In a nutshell, this can't happen unless something is really screwed up in the configuration. Did you remove all but 1MB of your memory? Is swap still configured? Did any of the hardware change? How much swap do you have configured? Please send more details, as this is totally unacceptable. I'd like to see hardware details, the disk details (disklabel output), a script file showing the timing problems, etc..
